Cardiff RSL has won 2019’s Club & Community Award for Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion. These Club & Community awards were created to recognise the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their local communities.
Our theme for this Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion award was ‘Auslan: Bringing two worlds together’. Cardiff RSL staff began Auslan training back in 2018 with the Deaf Society. These classes were over a two hour period with no conversation so that our staff could truly enter and understand the world of the deaf and hard of hearing. As part of our commitment and to show our community we were sincere in providing a safe, friendly and inclusive environment we appointed a Deaf Awareness Ambassador. For hearing members and guests to see staff sign with other patrons helps create awareness, reminds us all to have empathy and compassion but also allows families and friends to come out together as we have trained staff to be able to communicate with the whole group.
